You are your thoughts

You are your thoughts

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves"

~ Buddha

I have always known this to be true. You ARE your thoughts. Thoughts and actions go hand in hand. Your thoughts shape who you are as much as your actions shape your thoughts. It become a circle of virtue or a vicious circle.

This reminds me of an old Cherokee legend that I like to share with my students:

A Cherokee elder was teaching his grandchildren about life.

He said to them, “A fight is going on inside me… it is a terrible fight between two wolves.

One wolf represents fear, anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, hatefulness, and lies.

The other stands for joy, peace, love, hope, humbleness, kindness, friendship, generosity, faith, and truth.

This same fight is going on inside of you, and inside every other person, too.”

The children thought about it for a minute. Then one child asked his grandfather,

“Which wolf will win?”

The Cherokee elder replied…

“The one you feed.”

So which wolf are you feeding?

Those who want to improve their lives and feed the right wolf should start by improving the quality of their thoughts.
